  4. Ed says:

The giving out of free Bibles at schools has been an event and tradition in Bedford for many decades and is a constitutionally protected freedom

  5. Ed says:

Were the Gideons allowed to distribute Bibles to the students at the grade and middle schools ? I was wondering if The American Center For Law And Justice should get involved to make sure that this right by the Gideons and the right of these children are NOT abridged or thwarted by a principal who for possible political or philosophical reasons does not allow this distribution of Bibles. The giving our of free Bibles has been a standard event and traditions for many decades in Bedford. Call the principal and call the school board to make sure she has not violated again this freedom we have enjoyed .

  6. FREE PRESS STAFF says:

  7. Mark McConnell says:

It is interesting that the Bedford School District can use taxpayer money for something other than educating students.

  8. Tom Degarmo says:

I don’t live in Bedford School District area, but do work in Bedford, and live in Bedford County. The one thing that I know is that I am glad that I do not live in this school district. It just cracks me up how crazy things are, and then they go with a full campaign on radio and TV about the school district. What a waste of Tax Payer money, with everything else going on can they even afford it. Looks like these clowns need voted out next terms, and get rid of administration as well.

  9. Ed says:

Children should not be denied free New Testaments . For one person to stop this protected and legal practice because of whatever personal reason or issue they have , is not right .

  10. Ed says:

No one has explained why the principal of the Bedford elementary school has forbidden the Gideons from handing out free new testaments to the chidren. The Gideons have been doing this legal distribution for many many years. Why is it that this principal has chosen not to allow this ? Does someone have to contact the American Center For Law and Justice ??????????????????????

  11. Mark McConnell says:

    To MF:
The Everett Area School District seems to think similarly. If the money would have been used to maintain outlying schools the children wouldn’t need to be transported such distance in order to attend school.

  12. MF says:

Bedford Schools apparently think that building new schools will help the kids have a better education. They need to concentrate on the main thing EDUCATION not lots of sports and other nonsense !! We need to take a stand on administration and teachers salary, these people are over paid and don’t really care about education they are all about their pay check. Then there’s the school board, remember when it’s time to vote…maybe we should vote them all out.

  13. connie says:

why cant parents get to see videos on busses an in the school why cant they vew them if there child is involved in things .an why cant teachers be tought to respect the parents request for things . With out beating around the bush. the school is not helpin the parents or the children .

  14. Ed says:

Why has the principal of The Bedford elementary school refused to allow the Gideons to hand out new testaments to the students? The Gideons Society have been giving out Bibles to students for decades in Bedford county and now they have been denied . Is there an agenda by the current principal or personal ideology that she holds that would make her not want God’s Word to be freely given?

  15. Barb says:

I think if the parents just let it alone, the kids will follow suit. Many times the parents are the ones that set the tone on issues and the child feels like it is an “obligation” to follow their parents thoughts.

Kids adjust quickly, if just given the opportunity.

Today’s strangers are only friends that haven’t met yet. Give the kids a fighting chance to at least not be scared or mad because you are!

  16. Kmommy says:

I reside in Bedford approx 4 miles from airport . And my son gets on the bus at 7 am and does not arrive at the elem. school until 7:50 . And we live only 6 miles from the school . He is 9 years old and he has been on this long bus ride every since he has started school. And honestly i was not happy at first but its not bad at all now . I allow him to take his games. And i was waiting for somebody to tell him about them and i was marching into the school but never a word and he knows to put them away when arriving at school and not to get them out until getting on the bus in the afternoon. I think your child would do better then what you think on that long of a bus ride , But on the other hand i also think there is enough kids that go to bedford now and adding to them that would make the classroom size even bigger and would the childrens education suffer from this bigger class sizing?

  17. TR says:

    1) For years the kids in Centerville have made the bus ride from the state line. Why are the kids on the western side of the mountain so special.
    2) Is a Hyndman child who attends the Vo-Tech lesss important than one who doesn’t? It would seem so since Hyndman folk send their children up here for the Vo-Tech.
    3) If you want to keep your school so badly then form your own separate district. Use your own tax money and see how far you get.
    4) This whole discussion took place 20 years ago and the panel said close it down, the board just didn’t have the guts. Let’s get it done this time.
    5) As for Bedford building a new school every 5-10 years… Where was it built? The new elementary replaced the oldest in use school in the state. The Middle School was built either 1978 or 79 so it was due for an upgrade. So again I ask…. Where are all the new schools?

  18. BOBBY FEIGHT says:

i was thinking about the springs on this um deal wernt they supposed to help with the tax bill or were they gonna raise them seems only fair for them to help us out not like i want a free drink of water or something haha
maybe we should pay the people that run this county in the ground a little less and the people who actually help this area a little more isnt our money supposed to be spent to keep america free proud and educated not to line the pockets of certain people

  19. jimmy9753 says:

The kids on the other side of the mountain have been making the trip for alot of years. My daughter rides the bus 45 to 50 minutes a day. What are the people in Hyndman are “Special” ?

  20. M. P. MAUZY - FREE PRESS STAFF says:

    HOLLY,
I HAVE HEARD THAT A FEW OTHER FAMILIES WOULD SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO MD. INSTEAD OF BEDFORD. YOU HAVE A POINT IF THEY CAN SPEND ALOT OF MONEY ON A NEW SCHOOL, WHY CANT THEY LEAVE HYNDMAN ALONE. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT, IT IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED.

  21. Holly Meyers says:

I for one will not be sending my child to Bedford school if they can afford to spend money on building a new school every 5-10 years they can afford to keep the hyndman schools open! I think some people on the school board are counting their eggs before they are hatched. My kids will be home schooled or sent to a school in maryland before i send them to beford. it is to far to drive as i work in md and would not make it to my son who is now in school in a timely manner should the need arise!

  22. strawberry says:

i think it is insane for them to even think about shutting down hyndman high and elementry school.i know i dont want my 6yr old and next yr my 4 yr old traveling 45 min to an hr to school every day. and if he gets sick i have to go clean up to bedford to get him and not to mention if the roads are bad in the winter then i have 2 worry bout the bus drive up there and back in snow and ice covered roads. if it absolutly has to be done then i think they should leave the elementry school there and just close the high school. im not saying that because my boys r in pre k and kindergarden but it sounds resonable to have the big kids travel that n not the little kids . if that dont sound reasonable then let the parents on the sourthern side of hyndman chose if they want to ship their kids almost an hour to bedford or a half hour to a maryland school. all in all they are makeing a mistake if they chose to shut down the school and or schools and not have a back up in place for the hyndman area. their is nothing in hyndman as it is and now they want to take our education

  23. Robin Thompson says:

Where does the Bedford County School Board come up with the big bucks to hire a lawyer when they keep complaining they don’t have any money and need money for this and need money for that and now they are suing the County Commissioners because of the property taxes.

The school board didn’t get the money they thought they would when trying to raise our property taxes and now they are spending tax dollars hiring lawyers to sue to try to get money. To me this doesn’t make sense to spend tax dollars to try to get money. Seems to me that you don’t need the money if you can spend that much money to hire lawyers to sue the Commissioners.

Personally I think people who don’t have any children, the elderly on fixed incomes and other people whose children are grown and long out of school shouldn’t have to pay school taxes.

I guess the school board isn’t out to save money, but spend it anyway they can.
With the upcoming elections and the majority of people are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore, I’m sure your actions will be remembered for any forthcoming levy or anything else you put on the ballots in the future.
